Week of June 29 - July 5
June 29
Birthday Knifemaking! Chad and his son, Sylas, came from Chicago to make Railroad Spike Knives for Sylas' birthday. Pretty safe to say it was a good choice!
June 29
Christian was back this afternoon to start his first damascus knife! The goal is a small skinner knife, so he started with 7 layers of a combination of 1095 and 15n20. He did really well getting 2 folds done. Next time more grind, cut, and repeat...then shape the blade.
July 1
Family Fun this afternoon! These 4 made great Railroad Spike Knives!
July 1
Great class with this father and sons! They made some seriously shiny knives! Even the textured finish has a shiny cutting edge. Very nice job!
July 3
Derek and his son were back up from the Fort Wayne area to spend the day in the forge making their first Billet Knives! Both chose a Brute de Forge finish, leaving the texture on the blades. These are 2 beautiful knives!
July 5
Sometimes people see leaf spring in our steel rack and ask what we use it for. Well, this morning JJ was back to start a Mongolian style Scimitar! The plan is a 37" sword, with the widest point being a whopping 5" wide! This is going to be a monster of a blade! Starts as any sword starts, driving the point in. And as with any sword, the length and weight of the material are the biggest challenges initially. Great start to it today though!
July 5
Dan Campbell came to the forge today....ok, maybe not THAT Dan Campbell The Littles were back today and brought their friends, the Campbells, with them (one named Dan ). The Campbells made their first knives, beautiful Railroad spike knives. And because the Littles have been here many times, they forged their first daggers! They all did such a great job!
