Week of September 7-13

September 7

Scott and his daughter, Harlie, were back in the forge this morning. The regulars tend to take the summer off, so this was their first time back in a couple months. Harlie is continuing making her own knife set. Scott kept working on the elusive feather damascus.

September 9

Andy made lots of progress today with his damascus knife! He did the final fold, and shaped the design. It looks fantastic! Great shape! We did a quick motivational dip, and even with just some quick grinding, the damascus pattern looks beautiful! Next time he will finish grinding, heat treat, sand, and then handle.

September 9

What a fun class with Keegan! He has a few classes scheduled with us this fall, but he wanted to start at the beginning, with the basic blacksmithing class. He decided to make the snake. He learned to taper, create an upset, use punches and chisels with the treadle hammer, and then shape the snake. Really nice kid, and we should have fun in the next classes.

September 10

A new group of homeschooled siblings started their blacksmithing journey this morning in the forge! They did a great job with their first project, the "S" hook!

September 10

Really fun teambuilding group from Mann+Hummel tonight! They've been in before to make the railroad spike knife. But tonight we used the other side of the forge to make Steel Flowers! They learned plasma cutting, cold shaping steel, and welding...and many artistic choices were made! fun time, and beautiful flowers!

September 11

First class of the 14-17 yr old Level 1 Homeschool class! They did great with their first project, an "S" hook!

September 13

Very fun class with Ben! He got a class from his wife for his birthday. He made a fantastic railroad spike knife!

September 13

Alex was back today to start working on his first sword! He started with a 25" piece of 5160 spring steel, and drew it out to about 31 inches. He got the bulk of the hammering done. Next time, it's pulling out the tang and tweaking the shape...then lots and lots of grinding!
